A 2017 industry report by Move the Dial found women make up only five per cent of founders. As the cofounder of RateHub.ca — one of Canada’s leading sites for mortgage rates, insurance and more — Alyssa Furtado’s role in the city’s growing fintech industry not only helps her stand out, but in many ways also makes her a role model for the next generation of fintech entrepreneurs. Some of Furtado’s most recent successes include a $12 million Series A investment raised by her team in 2017 and led by Boston-based VC firm Elephant. In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavours, Furtado also frequently appears as a financial expert on CTV News, BNN, Global News, the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star.

“I’d encourage founders and leaders to always be on the lookout for talented and incredible women who would be an amazing addition to their teams. A lot of founders look for patterns in hiring, and they want to hire people who fit the pattern of employees they’ve hired in the past. It’s important they don’t let those patterns bias their perspectives.”
